What is a Live Draft?

I will essentially be publishing a draft of this novel directly to you. Keep in mind that it has only been edited by me and what you read will be either the first or second draft.

When you subscribe, you’ll take part in my authorship by:

1.) providing me with accountability

2.) possibly influencing the final draft with your constructive comments

Not only that, but my most sincere intention is that you enjoy the story.

How does this work?

Subscribe and you will get an email from me every Saturday containing a live draft chapter or a Behind-the-Scenes Extra post. You will have full access to the entire novel as I write it.

Find each episode in your email inbox or view it on my website.

Choose a paid subscription if you enjoy what you read and want to show your support, but there is no obligation.

Why Serialize a Novel?

If you already know me, you probably know that this novel has been in the works for a couple of years. While I’ve been making good progress, I’m impatient with the way traditional publishing works. It could be several years before anyone sees a word I have written — if they ever do. I find that terribly discouraging. That’s one reason.

The other reason is that I’ve noticed the trend away from paper to digital forms of literature, even if I’m one who still loves to display my literary conquests as bookshelf trophies. I’ve also noticed that people won’t choose to watch a movie before a series anymore. And I agree. A good series allows for a much deeper experience and character development, no matter what the genre. We can look forward to the next episode and then the next season.

A year ago, I set up a Substack account thinking it would be a good idea to use this newer format to send newsletters to promote my writing, but I was not inspired to do anything with it until I stumbled across Write More with Simon K Jones. His newsletter didn’t try to sell me a new marketing technique, he just said in effect, hey, this works for me. It helped me finish my novels, maybe it will work for you.

I studied the idea in-depth for a week in May of 2024. Would a serialized release work for Things That Can’t Be Broken? I think this it will!

I’m convinced that, yes, in this format, with the weekly loan of your eyeballs, you and I will complete this novel together. Then, who knows, maybe another. We’ll all see what happens Chapter by Chapter.

I hope you’ll join me on this novel-writing adventure. If you like to read, if you also write, or if you’re just curious about this novel or the process of writing, please be my guest.
